WHITE SODA BREAD

I sincerely hope you would share the same passion as me!

Soda bread is quick and easy to make.

No kneading or proving required.  Baked with flour, bicarbonate of soda, salt and buttermilk.

Can be paired with any meal of the day.

You could also serve the bread as an accompaniment to soups or with a ploughman.

Delicious with cheese too.

Ingredients
  • 180ml Buttermilk
  • 140gm Self-Raising Flour
  • 10gm Salt
  • 80ml Golden Syrup
  • 12gm Bi-carbonate of Soda
  • 140gm Plain Flour
Step No 1

Pre-heat the oven at 220C / Fan.

In a bowl add Plain flour, Self-Raising flour, bi-carbonate of soda and salt.

Mix the ingredients with a spatula.

Step No 2

Make a well in the centre of the bowl.

Step No 3

Pour the Golden syrup and finally add the buttermilk.

Step No 4

Using your hands, blend together, making a circular movement from the centre to the outside of the bowl.

Continue until the mixture comes roughly together.

Step No 5

Transfer the dough on a floured work surface.

With lightly floured hands, angle both hands on either side of the dough.

Step No 6

Tidy the mixture by tucking underneath and flipping over to form a rough ball.

Keep the dough about two inches thick.

Step No 7

Place the dough on a lined baking tray.

Step No 8

Using a sharp knife make a deep cut on top of the dough, down to the bottom and across.

This helps the dough to rise.

Step No 9

Then prick a few holes around the edges of the dough.

Step No 10

Transfer to a pre-heated oven.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until golden brown, or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped.

Step No 11

Allow to cool slightly.

Best to eat on the day it is made.

Break the bread.

Step No 12

Serve with some cheese.

Step No 13

Add a range of accompaniments like pickle and olives.
