SHEPHERD’S PIE

Shepherd’s Pie, is an English savoury dish, cooked with lamb mince and topped with mashed potatoes.

Shepherd’s Pie is made with similar ingredients as Cottage Pie.

The only difference between the two dishes is, that Shepherd Pie is cooked with Lamb mince, whereas Cottage Pie is cooked with Beef mince.

Served warm with vegetables of your choice.

Ingredients - 4 – 6 Servings

Ingredients

  • 500gm Lamb Mince
  • 300ml Stock
  • Large Shallots, Chopped
  • 2 Large Carrots, Diced
  • 150gm Tomato Purée
  • 50ml Worcestershire Sauce
  • 100ml Oil
  • 20gm Plain Flour
  • 20gm Salt
    Step No 1

    Pour oil in a saucepan.

    Add chopped shallots and diced carrots, stir and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, then season with some salt and stir well.

    Step No 2

    Add lamb mince to the saucepan.

    Cook by mashing and turning the meat until the meat browns.

    Step No 3

    Pour in the Worcestershire sauce.

    Step No 4

    Add tomato purée.

    Stir well to combine then continue cooking for a couple of minutes.

    Step No 5

    Sprinkle in the flour, mix thoroughly to prevent any lumps, cook for a further minute.

    Step No 6

    Pour in the stock.  Stir vigorously.

    Step No 7

    Then cover and simmer gently for 30 minutes.

    Cook until the mixture thickens slightly.

    Ingredients For The Topping

    Ingredients

    • 90-100gm Butter, Cubed
    • Grated Cheese

    • 8–10 Large Potatoes

      Step No 9

      Peel and cut into even size chunks.

      Step No 10

      Boil the potatoes for 12 to 15 minutes until tender.

      Drain in a colander and return to the pan.

      Mash using a potato masher.

      Step No 11

      Add cubes of butter and continue mashing.

      Step No 12

      Mash until smooth and creamy.

      Step No 13

      Transfer the cooked mince into an ovenproof dish.

      Step No 14

      Dollop the mashed potatoes on top of the meat.

      Step No 15

      Then using a fork, rough and score the surface of the mashed potatoes in a decorative pattern.

      Step No 16

      Scatter the grated cheese over the potatoes.

      Step No 17

      Cook for 20 – 25 minutes in a preheated oven at 180C / Fan until the topping is golden and the meat mixture bubbling.

      Step No 18

      Serve a portion of the pie on a plate accompanied with steamed vegetables.
